Harland Hostels - Key Personnel
Tema Toaisi oversees all the hostels and she and her husband, Toni, are also house parents to the Intermediate/Senior Boys.
Tema first came to the hostels as part of an internship while she was studying at the South Pacific Missionary Training Centre, in 2000. Her love for the children and her leadership abilities quickly became apparent, and once she had finished her studies Tema joined the staff. In 2008 she took over from Vivienne Harland as head of the hostels.
The quiet, ordered and loving atmosphere in the hostels owes a lot to Tema's leadership style. Staff at the hostels speak of how they appreciate the support, encouragement and training they receive from Tema. For Tema the children are part of her family. Those who cannot go home over the holidays return with her and Toni, to their village. Several of the Deaf children think of Tema's mother, siblings and cousins as part of their own family.
In 2014 Toni and Tema welcomed baby Temnik into their family, the much loved hostel baby.
Very important to Tema is developing good relationships with the parents of the Deaf children. A parent group has been set up to work with and support the hostels.
