End of Term Events

30/4/2017

There’s an expression in Fiji, that ‘time stands still’. But at GSD, it seems that first term has flown by! Exams and report cards are almost finished, and students will soon be leaving for their two week break.
Throughout first term, students have been taking swim lessons at the downtown Suva pool, as part of their physical education program. Volunteer Connor Wilson, a lifeguard from the USA, taught swim classes, in addition to helping out in the senior boys hostel and at school. A swim carnival was held at the end of the term, with students competing in a variety of races and water games. The final swim day ended with an ice cream treat, enjoyed by all.

In other sporting events this term, GSD joined with Gospel High School to train for the Zone Competition. Athletes from all over Fiji competed, hoping to qualify for the National Coca Cola Games. Deaf students Petero and Seva competed from GSD, and Nasoni from Gospel High. Petero (left) competed in the 1500, the 800, and the 4 by 4. He placed 4th in the first two events, and 3rd in the 4 by 4, which qualified him for the National Coca Cola Games in that event. Congrats to Petero, and all our deaf participants for a fine showing. Volunteers from Australia also provided training in basketball for our students on Thursday afternoons during the first term.
With Easter just around the corner, students are busy preparing for their Thursday Easter program at school. Palm Sunday in Fiji is also known as Children's Sunday. Children usually wear white to church, and perform a ‘mime’ and songs. Our deaf did a great job with their song in sign language, led by deaf Sunday School leader, Tuliana and hostel director, Tema. Students also performed a mime of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, and recited memorized Bible verses.

This week GSD also welcomed Dr. Richard Clarkson from the USA. Rick, a former educator at the RI School for the Deaf, and retired Headmaster of West Bay Christian Academy, will be evaluating students in Math, and will also be teaching some Bible classes. On Rick’s first visit to classrooms here, students enjoyed learning some American sign language, and had fun with with his magic tricks as well!
Prayers appreciated for the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the Board, Easter Camp, and safety for the students as they go back to their villages for the school break. Also, prayer for the planning and building of our new hostel, and for a new leadership team as we transition into the future.
